After the London marathon 2011, when I had a less-than-satisfactory race and missed my target time by five minutes or so, Nick and I had a chat. I was surprised. He was right! The essence of the agreement forged in the disappointment of my race, was that I would not race another marathon for a [...]

With all the comments and tributes written about Micah True, I feel that there is some band-wagoning going on. When I met him, he did not come across as someone interested in fame. You can read about it here: http://simonfreeman.co.uk/2011/09/meeting-caballo-blanco/

For the last 8 months or so I have been making a pilgrimage every Tuesday night to the New River stadium to meet up with Nick, Phoebe and a group of the runners they coach to take part in track sessions. These are great fun (always), bloody hard (often) and inspiring (usually). Last night was [...]

I have been frustrated by the nominees for the BBCs Sports Personality of the Year before, but this year my head almost popped with the damned stupidity of there being NO women on the shortlist and three golfers! I don’t really care whether or not the BBC want the show to be representative of what [...]

I quite agree Simon and let’s get behind this idea. I would love to vote for you, Ben or the lovely Phoebe Thomas but my vote has to go to Hannah England and Mo Farrah. Coach of the year has to be Bud Baldaro. Good luck guys

I know it is not much to boast about, but I won a Parkrun 5K this morning and it really ignited a fire in me that has been missing recently. I have got into a bit of a rut as far as mental toughness is concerned and it has manifested itself in me slowing to [...]

  • Simon Freeman wrote a new blog post: Saucony’s minimalist shoe range – there’s nothing to it…   7 months, 4 weeks ago · View

ThumbnailOn Tuesday I was invited to the press launch of Saucony’s new minimalist shoe range. This range incorporates three shoes, the Kinvara2, the Mirage and the Hattori and having tried two of the shoes in the range (I have to admit right now that I have no intention of trying the third!) I think the ideas [...]

Perfect. I am sure Julie would be interested. Probably the simplest thing that minimises the amount of navigation is to try to link up some canal tow-paths or river paths. I’ll have a think. Good to see you on Tuesday by the way – strong session all round I thought!

In reply to - Simon Freeman commented on the blog post Change As Good As A Rest? Chris, I totally agree with how much a change of scenery can make a huge difference. I sometimes think that if I run around Victoria Park one more time my head will explode. I have been thinking about catching the train out of London [...] · View

Could you let us know where you had the test done (and what it cost!) I think that I should try to figure out this sort of stuff.

Hi Cherie. Really delighted to see you on here! It is great to think back to the Forest of Dean weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed it and i got a huge amount out of it (not least all those lovely runs in the forest – so much nicer than running round Hackney where I live). I [...]

I am up for that and I know Helen would be too. We should try and put something together.

Recently I suspect many of you fellow endurance athletes, like me, have been watching and really thoroughly enjoying Mo Farah’s performances on the track. His tactical awareness, subtle aggression, devastating finishing kick and smooth running style make for very enjoyable viewing. He has always been a great athlete and a credit to UK athletics, but [...]

After absolutely no deliberation whatsoever I have signed up for the Seville marathon next year – 19 February – and I am as excited as… well it is possible to be about a marathon. Nick assures me that there is less of a gamble as far as weather is concerned than in London and I [...]

A top marathon choice Simon. Early spring and cool calm conditions normally. Good luck mate. Great session last night also – you are flying!!

After the London this year I had my now customary fortnight off and then started the build-up again. But I found it very difficult to be completely focussed on what I was supposed to be doing with my running. There was the obvious and ever-present distraction of work, and the usual desire post-marathon to regain [...]

OK, so I must admit that I am not a big shopping fan. I recently bought a suit for my upcoming wedding and whilst I loved the reason I was buying the suit, the several days spent in the West End walking from one end of Oxford Street to the other were… well, let’s say [...]

Ah quinoa – I have a love-hate relationship with it: I know it is supposed to be great for me so I love it, but it looks like squirrel vomit, so I hate it! Still I think it might be worth sticking with it and I have found that it is easy to over-cook it [...]

I think the London last weekend may have been the last race I do in the ASICS Tarthers. For some reason in the last few months I have been getting nasty blisters when running in them and I think maybe it is now time for a change. Has anyone here got any suggestions for some [...]

The day after the London marathon and I have had time to reflect on an interesting race. Physically I really did feel great going into the race although that wasn’t mirrored by my mental state, having had a pretty torrid time at work recently. But on the morning I felt as good as I hoped [...]

I can summarise your race easily Simon – Brilliant! You completely consolidated the pb gained in Florence on a tough day in London. In reality, the London run was worth much more than the time you were given. You missed your pb by seconds and ran a perfect race re pacing. The heat took the edge off in the final 10 miles. On route to London you have run pbs in a half and 5k! Be proud and lets run fast this summer. That track and those 3ks are waiting dear boy………….

Steve, it was great to meet you and it really was an honour and an education to run with someone as fit as you – gave me a real boost to run with you and all the others in Portugal. I’ll be following your races very closely in the future!
