Run felt a lot better today – more bounce. Spots on hands and feet are fading a little now and not as sore.

It appears that I have hand foot and mouth disease (nothing to do with the foot and mouth from animals). There’s no treatment apparently and will go away on its own.

Been sitting for last half hour or more with feet in a bucket of ice water – alternating left and right foot. Will prob need to keep doing this over next few weeks. Ice water is magic – bringing great relief that camomile lotion or sudocrem didn’t. My fault for doing a threshold session at 2pm in the blazing sunshine.
I suspect the 2pm heat wont be an issue until next May now Matt. This recent weather has been amazing and I hope those feet are ok? Take care.

wore wrong shoes – rubbing from early on, stopped briefly at 7k & had a drink of water, then soldiered on!
-
did Sherwood Pines 10k race today, would’ve been a good race except for a very bad blister on my right heel – time 43 minutes.
-
Just had a sports massage – left achilles sore again, but not too bad. My left quad is significantly smaller than my right though – by one inch. Wondered if I should try to build the muscle mass in this leg more & if so what exercise is best?
-
Cycled to the gym yesterday, then did 30 mins on rower, 30 mins on exercise bike, then biked home…..Took about 12 mins to bike home so didn’t take long. Today been out for bike ride for 30 mins – did just under 6 miles – got a good speed up at one point, but didn’t want to overdo it.

I am thinking of buying a bike (borrowing the wife’s at the moment), and just wondered if anyone else does much cycling, and what bike you use? The fixed gear bikes look good where you can’t freewheel, and thought that might be good for training as well.

legs are a lot better now, and looking forward to running again. The first couple of days after London it was hard going down the stairs, and I even struggled walking the dog down a slope. Itching to go for a run!
Well done Matt, Patience is the key though at this point. I am convinced that the fitter you go into a marathon the quicker you recover, but having said that, I also think many good club runners come back too soon and then feel slightly flat, tired or get injured in the months that follow. A few easy runs this week Matt and then enjoy getting back into some regular relaxed runs next week, as per the plan. Top stuff…….

Hi Simon, I ran London in a pair of Adidas Aegis. These are lightweight and quite tight fitting – as with all adidas I have to wear a size larger than I would normally. I have found these to be great shoes and in marathon buildups often wear these on longer runs as well – [...]

Well it was certainly hot running the London marathon. After my injury worries and all the time and money spent on the physio/masseurs couch the last couple of months I have to be pleased with my result – 3:29. I am pleased, but wish I could have gone quicker. I suppose it’s another marathon down to experience and good conditioning as well – so when I’ve recovered I’ll be stronger and faster. I planned to go off slow then build the pace later – Nick said it should be easy to 10 miles, and feel easy even at 20 so you can go for it after that – so that’s what I tried to do. However, there were really too many people in the way to run a steady even pace because when you’re getting into a nice rhythm the runners in front of you seem to be slowing round barriers, so I was forced to dash round people a couple of times – not the best way to run 26 miles! Well, I was also glad I didnt run with my Garmin as I’ve found in training I’m forever looking at it to see how fast I’m going instead of focusing on running. Just a basic Casio for me – I figured I’d run marathon pace enough in training to know what it should feel like & I’m glad I did. At 22 miles a Queen song came on, I started feeling really emotional (close to tears….!) – tried to run faster, then my right calf cramped & I had to slow with half a thought of stopping if it got worse. It eased but no chance of speeding up with my calf like that. Breathing wise felt fine most of way round, just legs not as strong as I’d like.
A great run Matt considering the injury leading into the race. You X trained like a demon in the 6 weeks leading into London and then ran sensibly once given the green light a few weeks before race day. A true example of patience and then X training to maintain fitness and still build for a marathon. You did it mate………..and lets be honest, there were days when we feared you might not make the start line. Well done and lets run a faster marathon in cool Autumn conditions.

Recent problems with knee pain have meant I have been resting more, icing and running more gently. I have been lucky over the last few years with running related injuries – apart from the odd aching muscle I haven’t had any. I believe this is partly due to the excellent schedules from Nick, but also [...]

How did you get on at Bath, Richard?

Hi I have not done much xtraining but I’d be interested to know what exercises people recommend. I did a gentle swim on saturday, and will probably swim again with the family maybe once a week. What exercises could I do at home that would benefit my running? Pressups, situps etc….? Also does anyone recommend [...]
