My spring marathon is only a few months away – exciting or frightening?

I’m excited to be doing London for the second time, and I am determined to put more training in than last year.
I prefer running races where I don’t exactly know the route though, which I find mentally easier. So I’m a bit apprehensive at running along the interminable Embankment, which I feel I know all too well after last year! How about you, do you usually research/run the route before a race?

I work in central London and often run part of the marathon route. The last time I did the marathon I did the last few miles the week before the event and ran from work down to Tower Bridge then along the embankment and up to the finish. I imagined how I would feel on race day with the crowds lined up on the side of the road and as I came down the home straight I imagined the finish line and me feeling strong and in control powering my way to the line. Race day was not exactly like that but not far off, I finished feeling strong with a time that I was really pleased with that was far better than my training would have suggested. So I would thoroughly recommend giving it a go. I often run from work back to Waterloo station so I would be happy to meet up with you and run that last section of the route.

I prefer to run a route I dont know, although I also enjoy doing some of the same races year after year as ther are certain parts that can be just amazing and you can look forward to – the downside are the bits you know are tough! At least with a new race – its kind of fresh and unexpected to a point. Think I need a fe wmore years under my belt to really make my mind up on this one!
